What are symptoms of a UTI?

• Painful urination or burning sensation while urinating
• Frequent urination
• Feeling the need to urinate despite having an empty bladder
• Urine that is cloudy, milky, or has an unusual odor
• Blood-tinged urine
• New pain in the lower belly area
• Pressure or cramping in the groin or lower abdomen

UTIs are common infections that happen when bacteria enters the urethra and moves into the urinary tract. People assigned female at birth have shorter urethras, making it easier for bacteria to enter. People who have had a UTI in the past, are sexually active, use spermicides, or have gone through menopause are at higher risk for developing a UTI.

The most common type of UTI is a bladder infection (cystitis). Early treatment can help prevent a UTI from progressing to a more serious condition, such as a kidney infection (pyelonephritis).

UTIs are typically treated with antibiotics. Commonly used medications for a UTI may include:

• Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Bactrim DS)
• Fosfomycin (Monurol)
• Nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Macrobid, Furadantin)
• Cephalexin
• Ceftriaxone

Treatment will be based on a review of your symptoms, medical history, and shared decision-making between you and your provider.

The following health practices may help prevent UTIs:

• Urinate after sexual activity
• Stay well hydrated
• Take showers instead of baths
• Minimize douching, sprays, or powders in the genital area
• Practice good hygiene by wiping from front to back

A telehealth visit may be right for you if you were assigned female at birth and have been experiencing mild UTI symptoms for less than one week.

Online UTI treatment may not be appropriate if you:

• Have no symptoms or have had symptoms lasting longer than 7 days
• Were assigned male at birth (including those who have had male-to-female sex reassignment surgery)
• Are pregnant or nursing
• Have a known urinary condition that may cause difficulty with urination
• Have had recent urinary surgery
• Have a compromised immune system (HIV, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, transplant, etc)
• Are experiencing vaginal symptoms (itching, irritation, discharge, odor, rash, sores, etc)
• Have a known kidney condition

Since some UTI symptoms may be similar to other medical conditions, it is recommended that you seek in-person care if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

• Symptoms lasting longer than one week
• New or unusual pain or tenderness in your upper abdomen, lower back, or sides
• Flu-like symptoms (fever greater than 100.4°F or 38°C lasting more than two days, chills, feeling very tired, etc.)
• Nausea for more than one day
• More than one episode of vomiting

Left untreated, UTIs can progress to more serious conditions like kidney disease. Getting early treatment is essential.
