For healthy adults between the ages of 14 and 70, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for Vitamin D is 600 international units (IU). While this average daily intake may sufficiently meet the nutrient requirements of healthy individuals in this age group, those with vitamin D deficiencies, roughly 41% of US adults, or those at risk of developing deficiencies may benefit from increased daily intake. The Endocrine Society considers the upper limit of 2,000 IU to be generally safe and unlikely to cause adverse effects.

There are two forms of vitamin D in the body: vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is considered the 'active' form of vitamin D. Vitamin D3 comes from animal sources, whereas vitamin D2 is mainly found in plant-based foods. Both forms have been shown to improve vitamin D levels, but vitamin D3 tends to be absorbed more effectively by humans. Excessive intake of Vitamin D may result in an excess of calcium levels in the blood, which carries symptoms including pain, nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, fatigue, and confusion.
